Where To Go ~ What To Do The first town to the south on Rt. 1 is Searsport, the home of several magnificent Captain's Houses. Entering downtown we see, on the right, the Penobscot Marine Museum, well worth a morning's visit. Searsport has also been named the "Antiquing Capital" of Maine - by the dealers, I suspect! A few miles to the south is Belfast, with its quaint shops, restaurants, working waterfront and the Belfast Maskers Theater Group. Still heading south, we find Camden, the home of Maine's Windjammer fleet, a beautiful harbor, many shops and things to see. Don't miss the view from Mt. Battie. South again we find Rockland with its working waterfront, restaurants, home of the Blues and Lobster Festivals and the Farnsworth Museum, which may be home to more Wyeths than anywhere. Well... have we not had a full, yet rewarding day? Let's head north and east tomorrow... Head N on Rt.1 & 3 to Ellsworth, continue on 3 toward Mt Desert Island, home of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Everything from technical climbing to walking the carriage paths. Door Mt., a Civil Conservation Corps project in the 1930's and 40's, provides a good aerobic workout without anything scary. Asticou Gardens in Northeast Harbor is a must. Southwest Harbor is home to Hinckley Yachts. The perimeter roads are worth the effort. If you have any time left, on your drive off MDI, take a right on Rt.1, in Ellsworth, where it splits with Rt.3 and some miles up the road you'll run into Schoodic Point, a photographer's delight.
